Karité - Good to know!
The word karité comes from the kaité tree, also known as the shea tree. The shea tree is a large and majestic fruit tree that grows wild in the savannahs of Central and West Africa, mainly in Burkina Faso, Mali and Sudan. Institut Karité Paris has chosen to source its shea butter from Burkina Faso, a country known for its excellent quality shea butter.
This 15 metre high tree lives for about two centuries. The families and people in the neighbourhood show incredible respect for this "sacred tree". It begins to bear fruit at the age of about 25 years and reaches maturity at the age of 50, producing almost 20kg of fruit per year. We have harvested these fruits and the almonds they contain are used to make Shea Butter. We can definitely say that shea butter is a precious ingredient, as with 20kg of fruit we can only get between 1 and 5kg of it!
First of all... the harvest
Harvesting shea butter takes a few months, from mid-June to mid-September. The fruits should be picked when they are ripe. They are carefully picked by hand to select the best ones. The flesh is edible and sweet, to the delight of gourmets!
Then... the extraction of the almond, also known as the shea nut
The shea fruit contains a nut, which in turn contains the almond, which contains the shea butter. After harvesting, the pulp must be removed to obtain the nuts. Sometimes the fruit is simply dried in the sun... Once they are ready, the nuts are shelled, by hand or with a machine, to extract the almond.
And finally... the transformation into shea butter
The almond extracted from the shea nuts is washed and then dried. It is then crushed, refined and kneaded until a thick paste is obtained, which is mixed with water and infused by hand. The next step is to pour it into boiling water so that the shea butter comes to the surface and impurities fall off. Once removed and cooled, the butter is kneaded before being steamed for a long time to obtain the oil, which is filtered before being bottled and packaged. To obtain our amazing cosmetic formulas, our shea butter is decolourised and then deodorised by mechanical processes that do not alter its quality and properties in any way.
Institut Karité Paris: This is how our natural Shea Butter is made!
